Description |
The provision of weather proof secure cycle storage that is easily accessible for the householder can help encourage cycling. Storage can be provided individually in the form of a shed with cycle loop set in concrete and lockable door or communally as a store with cycle loops set in concrete or lockers or cages provided.
Cycles should ideally be accessible without taking them through the house (i.e. a shed in the garden of a terraced property, with no rear garden access is not ideal and would not achieve EcoHomes credits). |
Cost
|
The cost of providing 50% of a development with cycle storage as described above is estimated at £130 /unit for 50 unit urban development
The cost of providing 95% of a development with cycle storage as described above is estimated at £247 /unit for 50 unit urban development. |
Benefits
|
|
Local Authorities |
Most local authorities have Transport Plans including traffic reduction plans and cycling strategies. Providing accessible, secure cycle storage facilities will encourage individuals to use cycling as an alternative means of transport over the car (or public transport). It may therefore contribute towards traffic reduction targets and cycling journey targets, CO2 emission reduction targets and improved air quality targets. These will impact on local and national targets. Decreased road traffic and improved air quality could have a considerable impact on local well-being, particularly from a health point of view.
|
Global Environment |
Emissions from road traffic account for 25% of CO2 emissions in the UK. Decreasing car traffic will therefore have a positive impact on emissions to the air – both in terms of CO2 and other air pollutants that have a negative impact on health.
|
Occupier |
There will be health, amenity and running cost benefits for householders if they use the cycle storage facilities effectively. The storage can be useful extra space if not used by the occupier for a cycle.
|
Developer |
If marketed as part of a lifestyle approach taken in the development, provision of well-designed cycle storage could be very attractive to householders or tenants. If the planning authority has a cycle strategy as part of their transport plan, provision of good quality cycle storage would be positively received.

Implementation notes
|
| There may be a requirement to change the layout and design of the development to allow for the provision of cycle storage either in communal sheds or individual garden sheds. This will require land and may be expensive. Providing access to rear gardens for cycle storage can conflict with Secure by Design considerations. |
