Description |
Zoned control of heating/cooling systems allows independent thermal control, in all separate areas (including floors) within a building.
Providing thermostatic radiator valves or equivalent control mechanisms is usually a sufficient level of control for most buildings, although some new industrial buildings should have measures in place to avoid stratification.
The thermal heating and cooling requirements in different zones of an office will depend on the local use and layout, therefore a degree of variation should be expected. This will depend on circulation routes, perimeter space, location of office equipment etc |
Cost
|
| Increased cost for installation of thermal zoning control is estimated as £1000 for a typical factory unit (5000m2 production, 1000m2 of office) and £3000 for a typical warehouse unit (13,000m2 production, 3340m2 office). |
Benefits
|
|
Local Authorities |
Where local authorities have climate change strategies, including CO2 reduction targets, effective control of heating will reduce wasted energy and contribute towards reaching those targets.
|
Global Environment |
Properly zoned heating within a building allows areas which are not in use to be heated to a lower level, or not at all. This reduces overall building energy consumption.
|
Occupier |
Reducing overall building energy consumption will reduce energy bills for the building occupier/business. The zoned control also provides greater comfort for building users, as the controls should enable temperature to be maintained at a more stable level.
|
Developer |
There is little direct benefit for the developer.
